Consumer goods are designed for convenience, and are destined to be disposed of shortly after they are purchased. In fact, 99% of items purchased by consumers are thrown away after just 6 months of use. But, in reality there is no "away" - to quote a poem entitled "trash men" by Charles Bukowski, "all that trash goes somewhere".

Similarly, as social media sites make it easier to share information online, the stream of personal data disclosed by users accumulates at a startling rate. Most users fail to consider that this data will live on long after the desire to share it has passed. In 2010, Google chairman Eric Schmidt predicted that young people will one day be allowed to change their names upon entering adulthood to escape their youthful indiscretions emblazoned on social media sites.

Each image in “all that trash goes somewhere” is accompanied by a quote taken from an anonymous user’s publicly accessible twitter feed. Both subjects, the trash and the social media quotes, bring to light the long tail of our quick, and often impulsive, actions. Whether it’s throwing away a coffee cup on the way to work, or posting to twitter at 3am, the the results of these actions live on long after the feeling is gone.

Each 35mm photograph is duplicated, mirrored, and reassembled to represent the ultimate accumulative effect of our trash.

Patterns of Science is named after a program created by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (Unesco) shortly after World War II. The program's purpose was to prevent an apocalyptic third world war by promoting intercultural understanding. At the time many thought the fundamental cause of international conflict was humanity's failure to realize the ideals of a world community and that we are all grounded in common values.

Using vintage catalog imagery, each piece in this series explores the relationship between the patterns that exist in fashion and the patterns that are found in human genetics. While a clothing pattern is designed to make the wearer look and feel different, when it is expanded over a model's exposed skin it instead represents the biological and emotional framework that we all share. Acknowledging that we are all the same encourages empathy, compassion and understanding.

In the early 1970's divorce wasn't as socially accepted as it is today. Back then, a friend of mine married her high school sweetheart and moved to southern California to work as a teacher. After five years of marriage, she divorced her husband and moved back to the east coast, bringing with her a box of slide film that she had taken during her married years. She knew she would be judged mercilessly upon returning home, but it was something she had to do. Her divorce was in direct defiance of social and religious norms at the time, and her fortitude in the face of judgement can be considered a form of protest.

This series, called Universal Equality, takes different quotes from signs and banners used during protests around the world and adds them to the scanned slide film photos. This combination brings to light the courageous personal forms of protest that often go unrecognized.

future trash is an attempt to use the New York City garbage post-positively as art. The result shows how trash can be revived and restored in a way that creates something new. Capitalism thrives on creating an emotional connection with consumer goods, yet most are still thrown away within 6 months of being purchased. Heaping piles of trash that line our streets are viewed by most as being worthless, yet the same items when originally purchased were sacred and highly sought after. This series uses photos taken of piles of trash to create spiritual, cubic shrines. The end result commemorates the discarded consumer goods and attempts to restore some of the emotional energy and purpose that they had before they were thrown away.

Each 35mm photograph of trash is duplicated, mirrored, and programmatically assembled into three dimensional cubes.

Individual and social behavior adapts to the changing cultural landscape. In other words, every day when our world changes, we need to change too.

Because these adaptations evolve slowly over time, individually they can go unnoticed, yet over time a bigger picture begins to form. Whether its social, political, artistic or adaptive, a prominent event can bring to light something that in hindsight has been happening all the while.

The series new day shows the beginnings of an imagined social or developmental evolution in New York. Each image is manipulated to include a variety of subtle changes to both human form (enlarged heads and feet, supernatural powers), or to social behavior (outward protests, rebellion, vandalism). When viewed one image at a time, the changes might be difficult to notice, but when viewed as a series, the aggregate of these minor changes build into something much bigger.

These photographs were taken in the early 1970s of two people that didn't know each other and never even met: Steve and Maria.

In 1972, a young Maria left California, taking with her a box of slide film, and headed back to the east coast. The slides, after spending the last 40 years stored in the basement of her childhood home, were recently scanned to reveal the many adventures of her past life. During the same time period, Steve was traveling around the US, taking photos everywhere from West Virginia to Arizona. For the past 40 years, these photographs were stored in a faux-wood photo album, which is now falling apart. All of these memories were recently scanned so that they can be digitally preserved.

The series "steve and maria" combines elements of Steve's photos and Maria's slides. Though Steve and Maria will never meet in person, these images visually bring together their stories, and give a glimpse of a generation reinventing themselves.

The kick of creation is the act of creating, not anything that happens afterward. - Kurt Vonnegut

For a period in 2010, part of my photographic process included keeping a small plastic camera in my bag. Occasionally this camera would accidentally fire while inside to produce these colorful, abstract photos. These ancillary creations were always a pleasant surprise, and have served as important contributions to several projects that I have worked on ever since.

A wake-initiated lucid dream (W.I.L.D.) occurs when the dreamer goes from a normal waking state directly into a dream state, with no apparent lapse in consciousness. During moments of lucidity sleepers are fully aware that they are dreaming and can, in varying degrees, control their dreams. Each dreamer will integrate the conscious and subconscious by including outside stimuli, like voices overheard in the park, into the dream narrative that they are creating.

When developing this series, I carried a small plastic camera in my bag which would occasionally take an accidental picture while inside. These images then became the colorful abstract backgrounds used in each piece. Adaptively combining uncontrolled elements into a controlled photographic process mimics the integration of conscious and unconscious components of a dream. Consciously photographing each subject while knowing a separate photo was being taken inside my bag mirrors the waking and dream components in a W.I.L.D.

Photos were taken in Herald Square, Bryant Park or Madison Square Park in New York City using 35mm film. Background photos were taking using a Lomo Action Sampler camera and are printed then cut to shape.

It is said that in the late 1800s, day laborers throughout the east coast would be promised a job in Brooklyn and a free train ticket to get there. Little did they know, the trains would take them to Brooklyn, West Virginia, and the jobs they were promised were in coal mines. Because most couldn't afford a train ticket back home they accepted the jobs and began working down in the mines.

Mine workers at that time were underground up to 16 hours a day. They were paid in scrip, which is currency that could only be used in the coal company's store. By the time the rent, utilities, medical services, and the mandatory funeral fund were all deducted, on pay day there was often nothing left to collect. Miners were essentially trapped, working for a currency that was worthless outside of the coal mine's land.

These 35mm photos were taken either in either New York or West Virginia. A photograph of a piece of coal is cut to shape and placed on top of the photo.

It’s easy to identify the differences between my hometown of Weston, West Virginia and my current residence in New York City, but it’s more satisfying to focus on the similarities. These photos, taken in either WV or NYC, have been altered to disguise their original location. This invites the viewer to shed their preconceptions and appreciate each anonymous landscape.

Photos are taken using 35mm film. Negative space is created by printing leftover exposures at the end of each roll and cutting them to shape.
